Replacing missing anterior teeth is one of the primary objectives in prosthetic dentistry. Depending on the number of missing teeth, the required clinical service time and the condition of the remaining dentition there are multiple treatment options. While removable dental prostheses (RPDs) are often used for temporary replacement fixed dental prostheses (FDPs) are placed for permanent restoration. Dependent on the general health condition and the personal preferences of the patient implants might not be indicated. If natural teeth without caries or fillings are bordering a single missing tooth unit cantilever resin bonded FDPs and three-unit conventional FDPs can be used. The resin bonded FDP requires only a minimal tooth structure removal of 3 to 10 % of the coronal hard tissues compared to 70 % for a conventional tooth preparation. Clinical survival rates of 100 % were reported for zirconia resin bonded FDPs while classic zirconia based FDPs showed 84.8 to 94.0 % after 5 years. Metal ceramic anterior FDPs showed slightly higher survival rates of 91.2 to 96.5 %. When deciding about the restorative approach several aspects like esthetic expectations of the patient, financial opportunities, remaining tooth structure, patient´s age and personal experiences have to be taken into account.
